CHAPTER NINE

Time wasn’t something that Ben had thought a lot about before the thing happened with the fake bomb. Now that he was thinking about it, he realized that most people, himself included, took time for granted. They made a plan for their lives and they expected things to go along. Things changed, they adapted, and they would go right on. Being so very scared for his life in those long minutes the other day had Ben becoming much more grateful for the time he had with all the people he loved.

He worked hard at not being morbid about it, but he cherished his time with the twins and Chip, as well as the whole Scarcity family, in a different way now. He sought the boys out when they weren’t in school. He and Chip had been spending time with Dillon, helping him with the household chores, not that Dillon needed them to, but Ben needed something to do and he and Chip wanted to be together as much as possible.

He’d gotten his phone back and, despite the harrowing experience he’d had with it, he needed to be connected to his family and work. It wasn’t the phone’s fault, after all. He had a couple of game apps on it that he let the twins play and he enjoyed their laughter as they amused themselves with it.

His college supervisor had told him to take that Friday off and if he felt safe he could return to the theater on Monday. She told him that his safety was most important and she would work with him if he felt he couldn’t continue with his internship this semester. He assured her that he wanted to continue this year.

Soldier was in and out, meeting with his detective, Marty Baber, who’d worked with them on Mike’s case last summer. They met with Officer Jansen, Jack, Gom, and the captain. Everyone was working hard gathering information about Mrs. Space’s history before she’d showed up as manager at the theater. Soldier was paying a company to watch the house where she and her nephew lived, but no one had seen any movements since the incident. No lights and the papers and mail were piling up at the door, so clearly they weren’t in residence. This news frustrated the grown-ups at the house.

The police were also trying to get more intel on Johnny Fon, things that could be used to put him away for good. Soldier was also being vigilant in finding out more about Mr. Sanders. There was no way he would let the man keep on with what they all believed he’d been doing with the boys that he’d fostered and the ones he’d brought in that the twins had told them about. No, Soldier told them, that was not going to continue. No one doubted him.

The young ones were just happy to have Ben and Chip there to have fun with them, model for their drawings, and give them attention. Both Ben and Chip
